Central California with a touch of Northern thrown in.

Monterey Kayakers
Central California with a touch of Northern thrown in.

Stepping out of our familiar Southern California we take you to central California to the spectacular Monterey Peninsula and Capitola Beach.

I couldn’t find an acceptable answer to decide where the line is drawn to divide Central versus Northern California but it is widely accepted that Santa Barbara starts central and north starts around Monterey so let’s go with that. Whatever the case may be, we were somewhere between central and northern California.

We started off on a very hazy morning to visit Monterey and take the picturesque 17 mile drive  south along the coast.  It was disappointing with the  sun blocked by the gray and  hurting optimum photo opportunities. However, we made the best of it as we drove along this scenic route.

Monterey was surprisingly crowded and the traffic was excruciatingly slow while driving toward the wharf.   It was a shame because we were hoping to get away from the hustle and bustle of Southern California’s gridlock. However, you can’t beat the amazing scenery which is well worth it while waiting in traffic.

First stop was the Wharf, a pier like structure that overlooked the beach on one side and the moored boats on the other. On the plus side, we found a parking spot which is always a great start. The boats that dotting the water made for a very serene atmosphere and the beach spanned as far as you can see.

Geocaching Part 2

Something to do in California as well as the whole world is Geocaching. We did a post in April of 2013 that tells you more.   Sometimes we go hunting usually on a Saturday on our way back from breakfast.  We found 3 out of three.

From their website at: http://www.geocaching.com
Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices.

Some are easy to find and some are hard. It is based on the size of the cache or the location.  We found one the size of a small marble and one as big as a toaster. Clues are given by people who have found them but without giving it away too much.   Sometimes there are no clues, you just go by your GPS.

In the photos below you can see examples.  Inside they have a paper to sign your name.   One was found under a big sign, what they call an easy grab(The happy Face)  One was near a bridge nestled in between a guard rail. The last one that you can see hidden inside the bushes was the largest box we have found.  There is a large community of people doing this, check it out!

Carlsbad Village

Sign

This week we spent about two hours and strolled around the area that is known as Carlsbad Village.  Carlsbad Village or downtown Carlsbad is located about 30 miles north of San Diego.  Even though Carlsbad has grown over the past twenty years as most beach towns have in California, it has not lost its charm.   The uniqueness of Carlsbad is proven in the Carlsbad Village area which is home to a variety of  shops, restaurants, bars, etc.  The area spans over a few blocks and includes the main avenue of Carlsbad Village drive, some of Coast Highway, Roosevelt, Grand Ave., and a few smaller streets.
